Kim’s Place Seafood Restaurant: Try The X.O. Hokkien Mee, Poached Prawns and Lemongrass Jelly!

It’s no secret that I love hokkien mee. But it’s hard to find really tasty hokkien mee in Singapore. And since there’s 50% discount for Kim’s Place today, we thought there’s no better place for a late lunch. ๐Ÿ˜€ The restaurant at Joo Chiat was deserted when we arrived around 3pm. And we ordered the X.O. Hokkien Mee you see above, Poached Prawns in Herbal Soup, Pan Fried Fragrant Pork Chop, and I decided to try this dessert for the first time: Lemongrass Jelly with Lemon Sorbet. You know how there are two kinds of people when it comes to ordering food? One group of people just have a knack for picking the ‘right’ items even when it’s an entirely new place, while the other group simply selects the most unpalatable ones? ๐Ÿ˜€ I belong to the first group… most of the time.

I picked the X.O. Hokkien Mee (S$12 for a Small portion, before discount). In case you are wondering, it’s not an X.O. sauce. It stands for ‘Xtra Oysters’. (@_@) The dish ends up looking like a strange mee rebus but it tastes REALLY GOOD. With such a generous serving of seafood, how can it not taste good, right? DEFINITELY order this dish. Also, for two pax, the Small portion is just right. It hits the spot, and doesn’t get you to the point of ‘jelat’, so you can definitely head back again soon for the same dish.

My darling picked this next dish, and I can only say it’s a disaster. I’m sorry for taking such a nice picture of the dish:

It’s Pan Fried Fragrant Pork Chop ($12 too, so you might as well get another serving of Hokkien Mee for the same price). The pork is tough and dry and if you don’t tell me it’s pork chop, well, I’d think it could be crocodile or kangaroo or who knows what else. The pickled veggies by the side are delightful but this dish makes me feel like I’m eating cardboard drizzled with some kind of sauce. And it’s supposedly one of their specialty dishes too *cough cough*.

When he wanted to order the crispy cereal prawns, I told him the Poached Prawns in Herbal Soup would be a better idea since they cook the prawns whole and you get to drink yummy soup! This dish costs $18…

There were 6 large, plump prawns. I think there was a little bit too much ‘hua tiew jiu’ in this soup. But otherwise it was enjoyable.

I actually ate the dessert first since the chef needed time to prepare the cooked food, and really, WHY NOT? Dessert should be eaten any time you want! ๐Ÿ˜€

The Lemongrass Jelly with Lemon Sorbet ($3.80) is amazing. The sourness of the lemon sorbet balances out the sweetness of the jelly, and they both smell delicious. My only complaint would be that the serving size is super small. I need more of this dessert please!

Lunch @ Kim’s Place Seafood: Really Good Hokkien Mee & 10 Percent Discount!

Kim's Place Hokkien Prawn Mee

I’ve previously blogged about Kim’s Place at Jalan Eunos. This particular post is about Kim’s Place Seafood at Joo Chiat Place (a short car ride away), where you can dine in air-conditioned comfort. I really love Kim’s hokkien mee. ๐Ÿ˜€ And apparently, Singapore’s hokkien mee is very different from KL’s. My pal told me that KL’s version of hokkien mee comes with black sauce and the noodles are thicker (?!) and in comparison, Singapore’s hokkien mee seems to have been served up by chefs who forgot to add the black sauce! LOL! Still, I really like our version of hokkien mee ‘cos I grew up eating it this way sans black sauce! ๐Ÿ˜€

And as you can see in the picture above, there’s a good amount of seafood and even fried pork lard by the side (I usually skip these). Just a squeeze of lime, and some of the chili sauce for the noodles, and your belly will feel very happy after that. ๐Ÿ˜€

We popped by this particular outlet as my love had bought a Groupon voucher for lunch-for-two and it came with a platter of veggies, oyster omelette and some dessert. Here’s the Nai Bai (ๅฅถ็™ฝ่œ) a.k.a Baby Pak Choi. On the receipt, it is stated as ‘Milk White’. What a literal translation! ๐Ÿ™‚

Since I started preparing more meals at home, I’ve realized just how dirty these vegetables can get. Soil and even small worms can be found trapped between those stalks, so I get especially wary when eating out and if I’m served a platter of vegetables like that, I check for soil and creepy crawlies before popping the veggies into my mouth. Fortunately, they seem really clean here.

As for the oyster omelette, it was the first time I ate this dish on a hot plate. Really good idea since oyster omelette doesn’t taste as good once it gets cold! However, the sauce tasted exceedingly salty to me (but for him, it was ok).

Dessert was some longan and almond jelly cubes. I wasn’t too concerned with these side dishes as I came here just for the hokkien mee! ๐Ÿ˜€
