Shape Run 2013: My First 10km Race :)

Last year, I ran a 5km race with the fiance. This year, I decided to go for a 10km run alone (he waited in the car, and snoozed. Lucky fella!). In any case, the Shape Run is an all-female run, with only a couple of hunks taking part in the race as pacers *wink wink* πŸ˜€

Those taking part in the 10km race had to be at the flag-off point by 6.30am:

My Training Regime

Basically, I have nothing to share with regard to my training for this run. LOL! The Shape Run 2013 was supposed to have taken place many months ago but it was postponed till today because of the haze previously (thanks ah, Indonesia!) πŸ˜› My body was well-conditioned back when the race was supposed to have happened.

I haven’t been training at all recently, not this month at least. After my October 3rd trip to Jakarta, I have been nursing a cold and recently, a bad cough. And this week, I only managed to do one practice run. And I clocked over 1hr 20 minutes.

But today, I managed to complete the race in under an hour – 58 minutes and 38 seconds, to be exact. I’m definitely pleased with the outcome. I just wonder what the timing would have been like had I done enough practice runs. πŸ˜€

Taken after I was done with the race:

What I love most about the Shape run has to be the goodie bags and sponsors. πŸ˜€

After my run, I went for a free massage at the Dermal therapy booth *super awesome!*

I also visited the Casio booth… and won a BabyG watch worth S$118!!!

There were other sponsors as well, such as BRANDS, DUO, etc. I disliked only one sponsor – Alpheus. They supplied water in small plastic cups to us. After the race, I had expected to receive at least a 250ml bottle of water, but no, it was still the small plastic cups. I spotted a small bottle at the booth but was told that it was only for volunteers. Then I spotted other ladies with 1.5litre Alpheus bottles and requested for one, but was told they were given out by mistake. I was made to feel like I was begging for water. Terrible, terrible service! I hope Alpheus never gets to be a sponsor at any other race event EVER. We run a 10km race and all we can get are puny cups of water after? *sigh*

But I shall choose to focus on the wonderful sponsors: Casio, Dermal Therapy etc. πŸ˜€ I’m definitely very happy with my brand new watch. πŸ˜€

Would I take part in the Shape Run again? Probably not, unless they have a 15km race, for instance. BUT, I would recommend all ladies to take part! It’s actually not that difficult – pick the pacers according to your desired race time (e.g. 55 minutes, 1 hour, 1 hr 20minutes, etc) and just follow them throughout the race! And the goodie bags are awesome! Train with Shape for FREE (there were 3 practice runs this year, with pacers too!) and receive goodie bags too!

Thank you, Shape Singapore! πŸ˜€

Also, lots of thanks to my energy bar sponsor, Stephen James Organics / Orevoworld. I ate two of the mini bars before the race, and I believe they helped keep my energy levels high, as they usually do. πŸ˜€ And my trainers from Quantum FitnessΒ also did their best in ensuring I stay fit. I can now move on to the next challenge!

I’ll be on the look out for a 15km race to join next year! Wheee!~ πŸ˜€

The Snacks I’ll Be Missing Most

I’ve been told that it’s best not to bring any food items into Australia. So, I won’t be able to indulge in my Stephen James Organics yummies while I’m there! 😦

During my trip to Korea, I brought these snacks along:

Yes, I brought my own food onto a budget airline flight. Oops! πŸ˜€

This time round, I’m gonna miss my all-time favorite: Organic Brownie Bar and Pili Nuts!

An actual brownie vs the Organic Brownie Bar πŸ˜€

One gets you fat, the other has ‘Living Energy’!

Organic Brownie Bar

Pili Nuts

The brownie bar is really the next best thing to eating an actual brownie! And the pili nuts are super delicious nuts from the Philippines. I hope I can find something as good in Australia!

I don’t simply eat the brownie bars and pili nuts straight from the pack all the time. I will sometimes add them to salads, for instance:

5 Foods I Eat To Boost My Energy & Health

Sometimes I marvel at my own ability to accomplish the impossible in just one day. Like you, of course, there are times when I WISH there are more than 24 hours in a day so I can complete all the tasks I have set out to do!

Take for instance, that very CRAZY day last week when I did not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR kiwi creations:

Zespri Kiwi Creations

It may not look like much, at a glance. But imagine having to conceptualize, create, and eventually blog about all of these in just one day? I didn’t even have time for lunch!

When it’s a really hectic, crazy day, I count on these little fellas to help me out, in boosting my energy levels (so I don’t tire out easily) and in keeping me healthy (once I’m ill, no work gets done!)…

Five Foods for Health and Energy

(left to right: Bananas, Stephen James Organics energy bars and nuts, BRANDS essence of chicken, BRANDS InnerShine, Avocados)

First up, the fruits…

Bananas and Avocados

Besides aiding in bowel movements, bananas are great for that energy boost to get you through the day. A plus is that bananas are high in potassium and also help restore lost electrolytes after your workout. Bananas are also great for making delicious smoothies! πŸ™‚

And avocados are one of my favorite breakfasts! A well-ripened avocado is super delicious. Avocados provide a lot of health benefits (just google it!) too as a plus!

And for those days when I just don’t have the time for a meal, or when I need a quick power-up, I count on my Stephen James energy bars:

Stephen James energy bars and nuts

I bring those bars with me everywhere! From plane rides to water rides at Adventure Cove Waterpark, to rock-climbing lessons! I just stick one into my pocket and gobble it down whenever I am feeling tired and/or hungry.

My favorite is the Organic Brownie Bar – it is amazing! You should go try one, seriously. They are available at most organic foodstores or you can simply purchase them online.

On the recent trip to Seoul to catch Wolverine, Scoot gave me Pringles and Coca-Cola at every meal. I passed those on to the blogger seated next to me (‘cos she’s a Coke and chips fan) and I survived on my energy bars, pili nuts, and good ol’ plain water. No loss, really! πŸ˜€

And don’t even get me started on the pili nuts, they are out-of-this-world delicious. You may have tried walnuts, peanuts, groundnuts, almonds, pistachios etc, but you have not really tried good nuts till you have eaten these pili nuts. It has an amazing buttery taste and the best part is that you can indulge without any guilt!

And of course, there’s BRANDS:

BRANDS products

I’ve always had BRANDS essence of chicken since I was a student. I’ve spent many sleepless nights armed with just chicken essence for battling my history texts! I majored in History at NUS, if you don’t already know. πŸ˜€ If you don’t have chicken essence with you at night, you are as good as dead when confronted by history texts which refuse to ‘come alive’.

Also, I’m actually drinking BRANDS Innershine for beauty purposes but the antioxidants in there are great for fighting disease!

Have you included any of the above in your daily diet? Leave me a comment below should you have any questions! πŸ˜€ Best question wins a box of chicken essence! <- Nah, I’m just kidding! But fire away! πŸ˜€
