老火汤 @ Waterway Point: Buy-1-Get-1-Free Soups

Waterway Point 老火汤

I had lunch at Waterway Point today as there’s a promotion going on at one of the new eateries. 老火汤’s soups are on offer now till 31 August – order one bowl of soup and get another (of the same price or lower) for FREE! We picked ‘Buddha Jump Over The Wall’ or what the Chinese call ‘佛跳墙’ as it’s easily one of the most pricey soups on their menu, getting the most out of the promo! 😀

Of course, you can opt for any of the other soups, such as Pork Rib with Apple & Snow Pear Soup (S$9.80), Sea Coconut Chicken Soup (S$14.80) or their herbal chicken soups (S$14.80 – S$16.80).

We ordered Pumpkin Rice and Brown Rice (S$2 each) to go along with the soups. I like having both kinds of rice mixed together.

As for the ‘Buddha Jump Over The Wall’ soup, I liked that it doesn’t have a ton of MSG in it (so we didn’t actually feel thirsty after the meal) and that the ingredients seem pretty fresh. There was chicken, fish maw, mushrooms, wolfberries, scallops (really small ones), etc. Really good comfort food on rainy days, I believe. But today’s weather was horrendously hot.

If, like me, you’re wondering why this soup comes with such an interesting name, and since when did Buddha actually jump over a wall, well, Wikipedia says it’s because the dish is so yummy that it’d entice vegetarian monks to jump over temple walls to get to it. LOL. Not sure if it’s true, but that’s an interesting story.

老火汤’s business sure was brisk today, no doubt due to their 1-for-1 promotion. Staff give out flyers at the mall’s entrance daily, I believe, so I’m sure many shoppers popped by to try the soups. Meanwhile, Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh just next door clearly suffered. While 老火汤 had few unoccupied tables, Rong Hua’s were largely unoccupied at lunchtime with perhaps only 2 pairs of diners. Since their clientele is largely the same, I’m sure Rong Hua’s boss won’t be pleased a competitor is right next door.

Another thing I noticed was how some diners leave a mess behind. There was a middle-aged man seated at the table next to ours, and after he was done with his meal, he left behind lots of chicken (or pork?) bones and bits of cartilage and all on the table, and the poor waitress had to pick them up one by one with the pair of chopsticks he had used. Clearing his one table took a while. Hopefully, more of us can learn to leave those bits and pieces we don’t want to eat in a separate bowl or plate so it makes clearing the dishes that much easier for staff. #beagoodcustomer

The promotion is available from now till 31 August, only from 11am to 430pm on Mondays to Fridays, excluding weekends and public holidays.

Zakka Modern Thai @ Waterway Point: AWESOME Dessert!!!

zakka modern thai red fish curry

We went to Waterway Point some time back to get more of that SUPER DELICIOUS roast chicken at The French Table. Alas! That standee was gone, so we assumed that the promotion for the week had been changed. So we retraced our steps back to The French Table’s sister company, Zakka Modern Thai, just a few units away. The set meals and the dessert were SO GOOD! For this kind of pricing, in a restaurant setting, one really DOES NOT EXPECT such good food. In the picture above, you see the red fish curry that he ordered.

The red fish curry comes with rice, a fried egg and some keropok. Who knew that keropok would go so well with the curry?! 😀 Anyway… here’s the menu:

zakka modern thai menu

Since there were only 2 mains to choose from, I ordered the black pepper claypot chicken noodles. I love vermicelli, and I especially love vermicelli that’s not too dry, and I enjoyed this dish:

zakka modern thai black pepper claypot chicken noodles

It comes with small pieces of chicken and mushroom, and I have to say that it’s seasoned to perfection. It’s not too salty (which can easily happen), not oily, and the portion size is just right.

Our set meals came with a spicy salad (which is so SHIOK!) and thai lime tea which is too addictive. The salad is really spicy though it’s such a small serving. And because of it, I very quickly finished my drink and drank from his cup as well. 😀zakka modern thai salad thai lime tea

zakka modern thai dessert

As for dessert, which often makes or breaks a meal, it was FABULOUS! 😀 This Thai Tea Cheesecake ($5.90) comes with ice cream too. When you visit Waterway Point, this is a ‘must eat’ item! 😀 I was rather surprised when staff told me the cheesecake is supplied by a vendor, and not made in-house. If it comes from a supplier, why haven’t I tried anything as yummy elsewhere?! 😀

I’m not sure what’s this week’s new menu, but feel free to pop by and check it out yourself!

The French Table at Waterway Point: Awesome Roast Chicken!

The French Table Waterway Point

We didn’t quite know where to have lunch at today, because we’ve been to Waterway Point too many times already. He didn’t want to try the Vietnamese food, while I felt that the Japanese food in this mall ‘CMI’ so we decided to head back to The French Table, which we’ve dined at previously. The lunch set menus are updated regularly and this time round, it was a pleasant surprise which awaited us: the half-roasted chicken at just S$9.80 before tax and service charge!

Because they actually have a standee for this promotion, I’m guessing that it’s going to be ongoing for a while. These standees don’t exactly come cheap, so yes, that’s my guess. And I sure hope it goes on for a long time, because the chicken is DELICIOUS!

The French Table Half Roasted Chicken

When the roast chicken was served, the couple seated at the next table on my right looked over, and the guy in the green shirt asked the wait staff if they could change the order he’d placed, as he wanted to order this same dish that had just been served to me. Hehehe! #copycat And the chicken really tasted as good as it looked! I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t any of the yummy potato mash that The French Table used to serve with their braised pork belly. But the sauce beneath this half-roasted chicken is SEDAP, OISHII, and YUMMY all rolled up into one. And the chicken was so tender and juicy! Even the chicken breast (which I do not eat, and do not like for being dry and tough) was so tender! Amazing! Totally worth the rather long wait for the food. *Bring a book or surf the Net using your phone, because The French Table doesn’t serve fast food. They serve good food.

What was actually served to us first, before the chicken came, was the pork bolognese baked rice with cheddar and mozzarella. It’s part of their set meal, which includes soup and a drink, for just S$9.90 before tax and service charge.

Waterway Point The French Table

It’s tasty, no doubt. But we would have LOVED if there were more ingredients within. It’s just a thin layer of cheesy goodness and minced pork on top (and perhaps a few other ingredients) and LOTS of rice beneath. If you’re ordering this on its own, you might not be able to finish eating all the rice.

But once the roast chicken was served, we mixed the yummy sauce with the rice, and it was delicious. You’ll end up scraping every grain from the claypot. 😀

Here’s the lunch set menu that was available today. Do note that it might be different when you visit as the chef likes to surprise customers with something new each time:

The French Table Set Meal

This meal for two ended up costing just S$23.20 all-inclusive. *I like that the server (with the big eyes and spectacles) brought over a cup of iced water without my having to ask for it, since we’d only ordered one drink. Hehe! We’ll be back again, for sure. 🙂

The French Table is located at #01-31 of Waterway Point. Tel: 6385 8052.

Buddy Hoagies @ Waterway Point: No Service Charge, Free Iced Water!

Buddy Hoagies Western BBQ Chicken

My pals ate at Buddy Hoagies at Waterway Point recently and highly recommended (to me) the baked potato and coleslaw. So the fiancé and I popped by for dinner yesterday and we tried the Western BBQ Chicken (S$9.90) and Fish n Chips (S$9.90). The prices are pretty affordable for “Western food”, right? And the best part is you don’t have to pay for service charge, only the GST. FREE iced water is also provided. 🙂

Buddy Hoagies Fish And Chips

I had the fish and chips and I must say that I like the breaded dory – crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. I hate fish and chips that end up tasting like burnt fish fillets, if you know what I mean. These ones here are pretty good. The fries are ‘meah‘ but I like the baked potato! Can I have 2 x baked potato instead? 😀

The Western BBQ Chicken you see in the first picture above was tasty. And there’s that smoky, charcoal sort of smell, like when eating satay. If I had been blind-folded and fed small pieces at a time, I would have thought I was eating chicken satay. It was well-glazed, moist inside, and overall pretty tasty. The onion rings are good too. Pity the coleslaw was so-so (tastes kinda like KFC’s, I feel).

The portions are reasonable, and leave enough space for dessert. I highly recommend Miam Miam‘s. And oh, I’d love to try the rosti at Buddy Hoagies next time. Yes! They serve Rosti! 😀

Miam Miam @ Waterway Point: Desserts Probably Worth Getting Fat For

Miam Miam Chocolate Molleaux

Remember in my previous post about the 5 Best Value-for-money Restaurants & Eateries in Waterway Point I mentioned Miam Miam and their Chocolate Molleaux, which I had yet to try? Well, now I have! 😀 Do not be deceived by my photo – it is actually a really small dessert. If you’re sharing it with a loved one, well, there’s not very much to share! 😀 It is basically a dark chocolate lava cake (served warm) with softee – that combination of hot + cold is awesome. This little dessert costs S$9.80. Great for special occasions, methinks. 🙂 [*Wait about 15-20 minutes while your dessert is being prepared!]

Then, we had the irresistible Caramelised Bananas Pancake too. It costs S$13.80 (a dollar more than when I reviewed Miam Miam at Westgate two years ago). The softee melts super fast, probably ‘cos the pancake is warm, but the best part has to be those caramelised chunky pieces of banana. Sedap! This particular dessert is more suitable for sharing than the Chocolate Molleaux (try pronouncing the word, by the way!) 😀

Miam Miam Caramelised Bananas Pancake

My pals had dinner here too. The omu rice was described as being “egg on rice, that’s all”. But the pasta here seems pretty enjoyable. I have to say it again: Miam Miam is really great for dessert. I’m not so sure about the French-Japanese fusion food, but the desserts are really YUM! 😀 But, of course, eat them early in the day if you can, unless you are like some of my pals who just don’t get fat no matter how large their sugar intake is. *sigh*

5 Best Value-For-Money Restaurants And Eateries In Waterway Point

Before Waterway Point opened, I spent very little on food, preferring to cook my own meals at home. But now that there are so many restaurants and eateries (which are new to Punggol) to check out, I’ve busted my budget in under a week. In this blogpost, I’ll share with you my top 5 recommendations for the best restaurants and eateries in Waterway Point that are absolutely worth every dollar you spend there! 🙂 Go check them out if you’re visiting Waterway Point, and keep your fingers crossed that these establishments aren’t crowded when you visit! If you need a guide to Waterway Point’s slightly confusing East and West Wings, click here.

#1: The French Table (S$9.90++ Lunch Promo)

The French Table Teriyaki Beef with Rice and Sunny Side Up

Read my review of The French Table here. I highly recommend their Braised Pork Belly with Mash set! I had their cream of tomato soup and their iced peach tea with my meal. The total cost for 2 pax to dine here with their lunch promo is only S$23.30. The restaurant is located at #01-31 of Waterway Point. UNBEATABLE price, DELICIOUS food. 🙂

#2: Encik Tan: S$5 Signature Noodles (*HALAL eatery)

Encik Tan Waterway Point

There’s always a long queue outside Encik Tan’s. And I finally decided to brave the queue for a late lunch today. It was past 3pm, mind you. The lady at the cashier said last night’s queue was even longer, and I would definitely not have gotten any food then. OMG. I ordered their Signature Noodles (S$5 + S$1 top up for lime juice). I like the fishballs, their special chicken meatballs, and especially their chili sauce which works so well with the meepok! And I don’t even like meepok in the first place! But I whacked this whole bowl of noodles because it was yummy and I was hungry after queuing for so long. LOL! Encik Tan’s is located at #B2-03 of Waterway Point.

#3: Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh (*Free soup refills)

Waterway Point Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh

You can read my review of Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh here. I’m not Cantonese but I do love drinking soup. And I like bak kut teh because I get free refills of soup. LOL. I also heard from a friend who dined here after I did, that some customers (who are in the know) requested for free 卤汁 (braised meat sauce?) for drizzling over their rice. And the smoked duck is supposedly pretty good too (I wouldn’t know; I don’t eat ‘smoked’ items). Rong Hua Bak Kut Teh is located at #B1-23 of Waterway Point.

#4: Miam Miam (great place for dessert if you’re already sick of fruit tarts)

Miam Miam Berries Cheesecake Parfait

I’d visited another Miam Miam outlet at Westgate two years ago. Their Caramelised Banana Pancake, and this Berries Cheesecake Parfait are out-of-this-world, according to my earlier review. *Update: I’ve tried the Chocolate Molleaux dessert at Waterway Point! 😀 Check out my review of Miam Miam at Waterway Point (location: #01-62).

#5: Pizza Hut (Say what?! YEAH! Pizza Hut!)

Pizza Hut Waterway Point

On the opening day of Waterway Point last Monday, EVERYWHERE was packed with people. And for my lunch appointment, I had no choice but to head to Pizza Hut where it had what looked like the shortest queue among all the restaurants that were open for business. XD I ordered the Valulicious Set Lunch which included the Pesto Baked Salmon you see in the picture above, chicken soup and an iced lemon tea. It cost S$17.20. After making payment, I noticed that at the bottom of the receipt was an invitation to take a survey (just like on Subway receipts!) and the reward was a FREE personal pan pizza (choose from Hawaiian and Veggie) on my next visit. Pretty cool eh? I have yet to claim my free pizza, but I’m already very happy about it. LOL. Oh, and service was excellent too. 🙂 Pizza Hut is located at #B1-11 of Waterway Point.

The French Table @ Waterway Point: Amazing Value 9.90 Lunch Sets!

The French Table Braised Pork Belly With Mash

If you don’t already know, I am in love with Waterway Point, the new mall in Punggol. 😀 This is my 3rd food review in 4 days since the mall first opened on 18th Jan. LOL. I’m sorry the pictures don’t do justice to the AWESOME lunch I had at The French Table this afternoon. I was there slightly after 1pm today and it was so easy to get a table. I sensed that there were decidedly fewer people in Waterway Point today – has the ‘magic’ worn off already? My lunch companion and I had initially thought that The French Table sounds, you know, atas and maybe pricey. But their lunch specials cost just S$9.90 before tax and service charge!

I chose the Braised Pork Belly because who can resist pork belly, you tell me? 😀 And it was such a fabulous choice, even if I do say so myself! My knife sliced through the skin and fat like a hot knife through butter. The pork is so soft, and the fatty bits are so, well, fatty and delicious, that I just had to stop myself halfway to take this photo, as a reminder of a yummy meal:

The French Table Braised Pork Belly

And the mashed potato which came with the braised pork belly was incredibly tasty too! I want more of it!!! There was a salad as well.

And before I forget, we were first served the cream of tomato soup before the mains. I found it very tangy, and didn’t quite finish it. I guess they used real tomatoes to make this soup, for it to taste this sour. You can request for some pepper, if you’d like.

The French Table Cream Of Tomato Soup

And we both had the iced peach tea which came free with the set lunches. You can select iced ocha too. I was very impressed that the drink that came with my S$9.90 lunch actually had a peach slice in it! WOW! This blew me away.

The French Table Iced Peach Tea

He ordered the Teriyaki Beef with Rice and Sunny Side Up. It was a good choice too. Slice through the egg yolk with your knife and watch the runny yolk flow out and coat the rice and other ingredients below. The wonderful flavors feel like a dance is happening on your tongue. And I love how The French Table is generous with the mushrooms, onion, and beef. If the Braised Pork Belly is my favorite item here, this teriyaki beef with rice is a close second!

My empty plate… HEHEHE!

The French Table Review

I asked one of the male wait staff how long this promotion would last and he said it’ll probably be 3 months or so. That definitely surprised me. Yummy Pork Belly at just S$9.90 and I can enjoy this promo for the next 3 months? No kidding! I don’t know how long this promo will actually last, but I do know that YOU should definitely pop by and try it yourself. I was told it’s available on weekends too! (Update: TFT Management has written to me to clarify that the promotion is NOT available on weekends! Please pop by on weekdays instead) Starting from 11am to about 3pm. Die die must try ok!

The French Table Lunch Set Promotion

And if your kids are tempted to touch the “display food” outside the restaurant, be warned that it is REAL food, not the plastic display ones. And you can check out the actual serving sizes. REALLY good value for money. I’ll be back, FOR SURE!

The French Table Waterway Point

Waterway Point The French Table

Set lunches for 2 cost us S$23.30 total, inclusive of tax. Unbeatable value for money. So pardon me for raving about this restaurant. In case you are wondering, nope, the food was not sponsored, and I was not paid for this review. I walked in today just like everyone else, lured by the pork belly display and low price! Haha!

The French Table boasts a good view of the Waterway and the surrounding area too. Get a table near the full-length windows if you can. It’s located at #01-31 of Waterway Point. Tel: 63858052. I noted that there were two child seats or high chairs (whatever you call them) during my visit. I’m not sure if it’s sufficient for the young families who will be visiting. So, maybe make a reservation before you head over if you are bringing a young kid, and tell the staff to reserve one for you?

Service was excellent this afternoon too. And they serve free water here – go grab a cup at the water dispenser. 🙂

And as the French might say… Bon Appétit!~

Final Update: TFT changes the lunch set menu every 2-3 weeks so you’re assured of something new each time you visit 🙂 Most recently, it’s…

Soup: Cream of California and Corn
Main Courses: Pork Ragout Pizza OR Carbonara Pasta OR Chicken Curry Baked Rice with poached egg
Drinks: Iced Peach Tea / Iced Ocha
*I do hope they’ll change it back to pork belly again soon! 😀 😀 😀

The French Table Pork Belly

[ Different presentation and ingredients ]

I visited The French Table again on 24/02/2016. Unfortunately, the pork belly was not as good the second time. The plating was different, the vegetables were different, and most importantly, the texture of the pork belly was different.

Apparently the sauce had been changed to a “thai sweet red wine sauce”. I’d sent feedback to the chef via their marketing personnel, ‘cos I was a little paiseh to just walk right up and say that the pork belly wasn’t as good as during my first visit. 😛 😉

The texture of the pork belly was just too tough for my liking during my second visit. Couldn’t finish it all. The mash was still yummy. And the boiled vegetables were ok, I guess.

Hmm… not really sure if I’ll pop by again. But I was quite adamant that I didn’t want a hosted lunch here because I think going incognito (read: undercover) is better so I get to taste the food just like any one of YOU would. Then my reviews would be more accurate. 🙂

Waterway Point’s BurgerUP: OK Taste But Food Was Cold

Waterway Point BurgerUp Relish Beef Burger

It was Opening Day of Waterway Point yesterday, and I met my neighbors there for supper (for me) and late dinner (for them) at BurgerUP, or Burger UP, whichever you fancy. Now, when you are hungry after a long day of work, you would like to have a warm (if not, hot) meal, right? Unfortunately, despite the slightly long wait for the food, also due to the crowds, our food was served cold. And I really hate eating cold fries. Too bad the burger and the chicken wings were cold too. But let me just stop here and say that the boss and lady boss were very nice. No, they didn’t know that I blog. They were attracted over to our table by my neighbor’s cute kid. See his pictures here at the Waterway Point indoor playground.

Waterway Point playground tunnel

I thought it’s just me, or us, who found the food at BurgerUP cold. Turns out there’s another group of bloggers, over at The Halal Food Blog, who were served cold food too. How strange. Read their blogpost here.

My neighbor had the Relish Beef Burger (S$11.80 meal), which you see in the first picture above. He’s not the sort to articulate his thoughts about the burger, but I did think the lettuce looked fresh, at least. 😛 However, with regard to the chicken wings, it’s not the whole chicken wing, just the mid-joint (which is my favorite) – or rather, half the mid-joint. So there’s just one bone instead of two. It’s like how prawn mee sellers split one prawn into two sections. Why this is done, I know not. But it’s the first time I’ve seen this!

I ordered the Herbalicious Beef Burger (S$13.80 meal), because it’s not often that I eat a herb-infused(?) burger. Truth be told, I did not taste any herbs, and the beef patty leaves more to be desired but I thought the ingredients seem fresh and the burger buns are soft, just how I like them.

The fries, however, were cold too. But the boss was quick to emphasize that they do not use microwave ovens to heat up their food (which is great, health-wise), and everything is freshly prepared upon one’s order. Still doesn’t explain why my food was served cold. Anyway~~~

Waterway Point BurgerUp Herbalicious Beef Burger

My pal’s wifey had the Cranberry Chicken Burger (S$10.80 meal), which she said has a tasty sauce. She described the sour cranberry sauce as being “开胃”, which means it whets the appetite. 🙂 A pity the burger wasn’t warm. She and I did not finish our burgers. And we were rather embarrassed (a.k.a. paiseh) when the boss came round again to ask for our feedback. We shouldn’t have felt embarrassed since we are paying customers, but it’s an Asian thing, I guess. On top of that, he seemed so nice and friendly. I was being truthful and sincere when I said I’ll be back to give the establishment a second chance though. PLEASE serve me some hot food the next time, so I can write you guys a good review. I really want to. 🙂

Waterway Point BurgerUp Cranberry Chicken Burger

To order a burger, you head to one of the ordering booths and key in your order, select your drink and side dish, then collect the printed receipt. Bring the receipt to the counter where the staff will collect the money from you, and give you the drink and your side dish (only coleslaw ‘cos fries and chicken wings are served with the burgers).

Waterway Point BurgerUP ordering booth

We tried all 3 Supreme Burgers, thinking that since they are ‘Supreme’, they must be BurgerUP’s best offerings. Will try the Yin Yang Burger and Surf N Turf Burger next time. Keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll like them. Then I can finally say I have a new burger joint I like to go to. 🙂

Waterway Point Burger Up burgers

For the price of approximately S$12 per meal, customers will expect a little more from BurgerUP. Also, I noted that BurgerUP is banking on franchising to grow their business. From a consumer’s perspective, here’s what I think is great about this business, and what can be improved upon:

What’s Great:

  1. Customizable Burgers. Singaporeans love burgers, and they also love customizing stuff. So this is awesome.
  2. Family friendly outlet (at Waterway Point) – LCD screens at various parts of the outlet so customers can wait at their tables for their order number to show up on the screen, before heading to collect their food. Also, child seats are provided.
  3. Interesting combinations – A chicken & beef burger? A fish & chicken burger? Must try.
  4. Friendly staff – even though the outlet seemed shorthanded and slightly overwhelmed by the crowds on Waterway Point’s opening day.
  5. Each burger comes with a little sticker stating the name of the burger and its ingredients. No more puzzling over which burger is whose.
  6. Halal. So our Muslim friends can dine here too, and keep the cash registers ringing.
  7. Amazingly long opening hours. Sun – Thurs & PH: 10am to 12 midnight. Fri, Sat & Eve of PH: 10am to 3am!!! [*On the flipside, I’m wondering if this means it’ll be even more difficult to hire staff]

What Needs Improving:

  1. Quality Of The Food: If one blogger says the food is cold, that’s quite bad.. If two bloggers say the food is cold, it’s potentially disastrous. If any of the famous food bloggers say the food is cold too, then OMG I-don’t-know-what-to-say. Best to start serving warm food like NOW.
  2. Why are the chicken wings only HALF chicken wings? Correction: half mid-joint wings. Which means there’s only 1 bone, instead of the usual 2 connected ones. I didn’t pay half price, did I?

Ultimately, Singaporeans don’t mind supporting #local one time (GO, SG brands!) but if after the first visit (and maybe a second), they are still not impressed, they won’t be back. Something all F&B owners should note. 🙂
