I also wanted to add “That Piece Of Shit” to this blogpost title but figured it’d make it too long. XD So, yesterday, I received an email supposedly from Deliveroo about a “New sign-in to your account”. And my goodness… I have not bought anything off Deliveroo for the longest time. I think it was ever since they put a limit to the number of referrals they are willing to pay for. Many years back I was happily referring people to use their platform until one day when I realised that… WLE… there’s a limit to the number of referral payouts they were giving. Then I stopped supporting them. Ha! So, after like 5 years I get an email about a new sign-in to my account? Is this a scam or what?
The email was from: Deliveroo noreply@t.deliveroo.com and looked like this:
I ignored it, obviously.
And after I’d gone to bed, there was another email sent to me:
So someone signed in to my account, and changed my password. Hmm… and?
I’ve retrieved my account and changed the password too. And went to check on my order history and lo and behold…
Evidently, the scammer tried to place a £315 order but that failed, so he/she/it tried again with a smaller sum: £147. And that ALSO failed. MUAHAHAHAAAAAA!
Well, if he/she/it had been more observant, the last order I placed was back in Nov 2016 (just S$31.30) and the credit card had long expired.
So the hacker did not get any food. 😛 😛 😛
Also, I’ve deleted the card from my Deliveroo account, just in case someone else decides to do the same. If it really happens, then I’ll probably deactivate my Deliveroo account too, since I haven’t used it in 5 years and am unlikely to use it again.
Truth be told, I’m shocked someone would order over S$500 worth of food using another person’s account… fraudulently. Firstly, why are they even eating so much? Or ordering for the whole organisation? 😛 My darling said that perhaps the person ordered a 14-day meal plan (hahaha) or is in cahoots with the restaurant anyway – so the hacker gets cash instead of food (oooooo that’s a possibility?)
Either way, I guess the lesson here is to be diligent and not let the various online platforms save your credit card details for faster checkout next time. Just key in your card details every single time you order something. If nothing’s saved then there’s nothing for the hackers and scammers to misuse.
I’m just so glad this horrible fella did not get his/her/its Taste of China order. That piece of shit. 😛
