Kim’s Place Seafood Restaurant: Try The X.O. Hokkien Mee, Poached Prawns and Lemongrass Jelly!

kim's place seafood restaurant

It’s no secret that I love hokkien mee. But it’s hard to find really tasty hokkien mee in Singapore. And since there’s 50% discount for Kim’s Place today, we thought there’s no better place for a late lunch. πŸ˜€ The restaurant at Joo Chiat was deserted when we arrived around 3pm. And we ordered the X.O. Hokkien Mee you see above, Poached Prawns in Herbal Soup, Pan Fried Fragrant Pork Chop, and I decided to try this dessert for the first time: Lemongrass Jelly with Lemon Sorbet. You know how there are two kinds of people when it comes to ordering food? One group of people just have a knack for picking the ‘right’ items even when it’s an entirely new place, while the other group simply selects the most unpalatable ones? πŸ˜€ I belong to the first group… most of the time.

I picked the X.O. Hokkien Mee (S$12 for a Small portion, before discount). In case you are wondering, it’s not an X.O. sauce. It stands for ‘Xtra Oysters’. (@_@) The dish ends up looking like a strange mee rebus but it tastes REALLY GOOD. With such a generous serving of seafood, how can it not taste good, right? DEFINITELY order this dish. Also, for two pax, the Small portion is just right. It hits the spot, and doesn’t get you to the point of ‘jelat’, so you can definitely head back again soon for the same dish.

My darling picked this next dish, and I can only say it’s a disaster. I’m sorry for taking such a nice picture of the dish:

It’s Pan Fried Fragrant Pork Chop ($12 too, so you might as well get another serving of Hokkien Mee for the same price). The pork is tough and dry and if you don’t tell me it’s pork chop, well, I’d think it could be crocodile or kangaroo or who knows what else. The pickled veggies by the side are delightful but this dish makes me feel like I’m eating cardboard drizzled with some kind of sauce. And it’s supposedly one of their specialty dishes too *cough cough*.

When he wanted to order the crispy cereal prawns, I told him the Poached Prawns in Herbal Soup would be a better idea since they cook the prawns whole and you get to drink yummy soup! This dish costs $18…

There were 6 large, plump prawns. I think there was a little bit too much ‘hua tiew jiu’ in this soup. But otherwise it was enjoyable.

I actually ate the dessert first since the chef needed time to prepare the cooked food, and really, WHY NOT? Dessert should be eaten any time you want! πŸ˜€

The Lemongrass Jelly with Lemon Sorbet ($3.80) is amazing. The sourness of the lemon sorbet balances out the sweetness of the jelly, and they both smell delicious. My only complaint would be that the serving size is super small. I need more of this dessert please!

Mizu Cafe @ City Square Mall: Good Food, No GST, No Service Charge

mizu cafe city square mall

It’s not our first visit to Mizu Cafe and definitely not our last either. If you’re looking for good food at City Square Mall, make Mizu Cafe your first stop. The food is delicious, inexpensive and best of all, the service here is great too! Today we had the Lor Mee w/Fish Cutlet ($6.80) and Custard Pork Ribs Rice ($8.80). There’s no GST and service charge either! AND you can use FavePay. Also, you can look out for Fave deals. πŸ˜‰ I think the lor mee is decent; and you can choose to have either fish or chicken cutlet to go along with it. The Custard Pork Ribs are awesome – no bone, delicious sauce, and just a small serving of rice (you’ll definitely eat it all).

While he had coffee ($2), I picked the Lemon Honey Green Tea ($3.80) which looked really pretty but was actually quite sour. I wonder if someone forgot to add the honey! πŸ˜€

For dessert, we had the Fruity Aiyu Jelly ($5.80) and Honey Grass Jelly ($2.80). The aiyu jelly came with mango shaved ice plus a scoop of vanilla ice cream too. Perfect conclusion to this meal.

I like that they serve the honey separately. And they include these orchids with just about every item – it feels like you’re at a resort somewhere. XD And this place doesn’t charge GST nor S.C. Amazing, no?

It’s easy to overlook this little eatery, but it definitely worth a visit…

The Wallet Shop: Best Place To Buy Wallets in Singapore

the wallet shop review

When my darling asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I replied “A good night’s sleep”. Basically it meant ‘don’t chat with me at night and don’t wake me up in the morning either’ – no Christmas buffet is getting between me and my beauty sleep. πŸ˜€ As for him, he wanted a Bellroy wallet because it’s apparently famous for super slim wallets, and I’ve never even heard of the brand before. Anyway, I got him a Bellroy wallet from The Wallet Shop and I also got myself a Billabong wallet in pink – it’s so pretty! πŸ™‚ The Wallet Shop seems to have been around for the longest time, no? When I was a student, I’d already been their customer. And at that time, another store us students used to patronize was 77th Street, which has shut down already. So what’s the reason for The Wallet Shop’s ‘longevity’? πŸ˜‰ I’ll ask them next time.

As for my personal shopping experience, I have to say that I find it tough to buy wallets online because I don’t get to feel the quality of the material, hold it in my hand and see if it’s just the right size. And unlike clothes which you can get for less than $5 online, wallets usually tend to cost a bit more so I really do prefer buying them in stores. Especially when there’s a promotion.

Our Christmas gifts from The Wallet Shop:

First up, my pretty pink Billabong wallet. Actually it looks more of a peachy pink color under sunlight. I like that it has A LOT of card slots. A total of 20! Can you believe it?!

As for the Bellroy wallet, let’s just say it’s so skinny I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t slip through his fingers at some point. But who cares? As long as the recipient likes the gift. πŸ˜€

I decided to prank him on Christmas Eve so I’d prepared two wrapped ‘presents’. I presented him with the smaller, squarish one first as I figured it looks like a box containing a wallet, which he’ll be expecting. Inside, it’s actually a box of KitKat that was lying around at home that I just grabbed and wrapped up! πŸ˜€ His expression was *tears* priceless when he discovered it’s chocolate; tried to mask his disappointment and tell me he loves KitKat. Then I handed him the other wrapped present and said it’s a Christmas card within – believable ‘cos it’s so slim. And then he’s like “Oh you managed to find the wallet? How? Where?” (@_@)

I think I enjoy pranking people a little more than I enjoy receiving presents. Haha!

In any case, if you like the wrapping paper, it’s from Bedok Mall / The Art Faculty. The artist is Jovan Neo, an individual with autism who loves city scenes. I really like Jovan’s artwork. I think having it printed on wrapping paper is simply brilliant.

Thai Food @ Folks Collective China Square: Hits & Misses

folks collective review

We visited the Prudential Marina Bay Carnival on Opening Day last week then went to Folks Collective for food. You’ll definitely want to visit the Carnival on a near-empty stomach or else the gravity-defying rides will have you mimicking the Merlion. At Folks Collective, the decor can probably only be described as eclectic, with mismatched chairs and furniture, a Chinese medicine chest in one corner and a gramophone at the other end. But we picked this place not for the decor, but because we wanted to have some Thai food for dinner. πŸ˜€ It appears that some of the staff here are actual Thai folks, which we took as a good sign.

In the first picture you see above is their Khao Soi ($14.90), what they describe as Thai laksa with (two) chicken drumsticks under “crunchy golden noodle ribbons”. There’s also meesua underneath those “ribbons”. The taste of the broth was not quite to my liking though… I can only say it’s probably an acquired taste. What I really like is this next dish: Chargrilled Pork Skewers ($8.90)Β which is a must-order dish, imho.

Next, there’s the Black Pepper Beef Stir Fry ($14.90). As you can probably imagine, it tastes just like something you can order at any zichar stall in your neighborhood. So I wouldn’t come here just for this. The beef is tender and juicy though, so props to them.

But my favorite dish of all has to be the Roasted Duck & Lychee Red Curry ($12.90). It’s such a strange combination. Why would you put roasted duck slices in red curry? And lychees? What is this – a dessert?! But it works! And it’s DELICIOUS. My goodness. Just order this curry and the pork skewers and white rice. Perfection.
