Partnering With e2i: How Angliss Is Overcoming The COVID-19 Crisis

Angliss Singapore

(Angel Ding, MD of Angliss Singapore, and Gilbert Tan, CEO of e2i)

It is a hive of activity over at Angliss as the company is, interestingly, expanding and hiring during this period. Business is booming for this professional food supplier so their Managing Director, Angel Ding, says she has in store a “very, very big bonus” for her staff. Currently, Angliss Singapore has 286 workers, the majority of them Singaporeans.

You’ve probably seen the white Angliss refrigerated trucks around Singapore and even in your neighbourhood (I know I have), making deliveries to homes from the Circuit Breaker period till Phase Two right now. While many others in the F&B industry are struggling to keep afloat, Angliss has expanded its fleet – from 45 vehicles to 53!

Angliss’ staff have revealed their amazement at having (more) work to do. And in the past 2 months alone, Angliss has even hired an additional 4 managers as the company believes this is a good time to recruit talent and even has places for 5 to 10 more hires.

However, Angliss’ current success is not being taken for granted as the company was on the path towards retrenchment. In mid-April, the directive from the head office in South Africa was to lay off staff if things do not improve.

During the Circuit Breaker, sales volume had dropped by a good 50%, as restaurants (Angliss’ usual clientele) began closing down. An MNC with hefty expenses, time was not on Angliss’ side. And the Jobs Support Scheme (JSS) provided only 25% in wage support when the company needed close to 50%.

The company also had to scramble to house all their Malaysian workers when borders were closed. To do so, Angliss quickly converted retail space to provide accommodation for them.

How Does e2i Help Businesses?

The partnership between Angliss and e2i began some time back, in 2017.

Angliss credits e2i with timely, useful advice which helped them prevent avoidable mistakes, so things can be done once and done well. For instance, e2i advised Angliss to have non-slip flooring so as to make the workplace safer for its staff, especially the mature workers. To begin with, the company’s renovation plan (before COVID-19 struck) cost a high 6-figure sum, which was “over budget” already. So it could ill afford any additional costs for rectification later on.

One major project involved their Demo Kitchen. In the past, there was no proper fire suppression system and staff worked within tight space constraints. The Demo Kitchen also had steps previously, which have now been levelled and made more friendly for mature workers. Providing support in terms of funding and intimate industry knowledge, e2i assisted in Angliss’ transformation.

Likewise, for Angliss’ Warehouse Management Project, e2i helped fund almost half of the project cost, to enable previously back-breaking tasks to be done with relative ease now by the mature workers.

Angel says she has enjoyed working with e2i as the latter is “approachable” and there is little to no red tape.

In response, the e2i CEO, Gilbert Tan, pointed out that what e2i does is recession-proof. Even as the economy is going south, e2i is busy helping workers find the right companies to hire them. An experienced and effective matchmaker for jobseekers and companies, e2i screens individuals, scrutinizing each person. Unlike headhunters who will usually recommend young and energetic workers, e2i also helps match mature, older and even senior* workers with the right companies. (*Mature workers are those in their 40s, older workers are those in their 50s and senior workers are those 60 years old and above). Crediting e2i for a mindset change, Angel says she now sees the value in hiring those who are aged 35 to 50 as they are “more stable, less inclined to job-hop, have more experience, and are willing to stay and build up this company”.

Gilbert went on to share that in screening candidates, e2i looks at the person’s values, skill sets, and that “X-factor” which will be a match with the respective company’s culture. For instance, one e2i-recommended hire, Jessica, is not only knowledgeable but speaks French too.

When asked about the businesses that e2i goes into long-term partnerships with, Gilbert shared that e2i looks for employers with “entrepreneurship guts” and that instead of working on a one-off, transactional basis, e2i prefers a relationship built on trust and understanding, and one that stands the test of time.

And with Angliss’ remodeled Demo Kitchen, the stage was indeed set for its timely business transformation.

What Strategy Did Angliss Employ To Combat The Drop in Business Due To COVID-19?

Through chatting with a friend, Angel came to know about how some enterprising people were using Facebook Live to sell products. And she saw how this same platform could similarly be used by Angliss to promote healthy eating and eating well. Thus, the company now uses their ‘Angliss Singapore’ Facebook Live sessions to teach their community about how to eat well and appreciate food. Filming in Angliss’ (upgraded) demo kitchen, the chefs get to teach their online community about food sources, nutritional values, pairings, and more. This has even become Angliss’ “core business” and boosted their revenue.

Angliss online

The management team in Angliss has learnt that during a crisis (危机), there are opportunities (机会). And that even during the panic, businessmen have to know that a crisis can present opportunities to those who are able to spot and seize them. Particularly commendable is how Angliss has taken the next step of supporting fellow business leaders so they can grow together and help each other. Citing a partnership with Montreux Patisserie, which also works closely with e2i, the business leaders have contributed to what Gilbert calls an ecosystem in which business owners can network, uplift, support and encourage each other.

Angliss also works closely with partners like Petalicious (which supplies edible flowers and leaves) and Freshable Marketing which supplies seafood. Amid global supply chain disruptions, these partnerships allow Angliss to continually supply micro cress, edible flowers and fresh seafood to local restaurants.

petalicious singapore

(Foreground: Oyster leaf. It does indeed taste remarkably like oysters!)

freshable marketing

(The e2i chief, Gilbert, checking out the lobsters at Freshable Marketing Pte Ltd. The company supplies lobsters, clams, oysters, and more.)

What Sort Of Business Is e2i Looking Out For?

Gilbert shared that firstly, the business must be a resilient one. Secondly, the boss must have ideas to take the company forward. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, the company must be willing to invest in making the workplace more attractive, and be open to onboarding and training, say, mature workers.

Their Advice For Workers Who Have Been Retrenched?

Firstly, jobseekers need to be realistic, and ask for the “market price” instead of their dream salary. Tell the interviewer what you can do for the company, before making demands about the benefits you would like the company to provide for you.

Also, it would be useful to sign up with one of e2i’s coaches and get the necessary assistance. Of course, a permanent job would be most ideal but as the economy goes south, do be open to temporary placements and traineeships too. A last resort would be a skills programme which could last for 6 to 12 months, and the training allowance may be on the low side, but it’ll at least help put food on the table.

Iron Nori (9 Jln Wangi) Serves Excellent Mashed Potatoes :D

What did you have for dinner on National Day? 😀 For us, it was a regular work day, then we made our way to 9 Jln Wangi where Iron Nori is located. My darling had made a reservation via Eatigo for a 50% discount dining slot. Strangely enough, our booking was for 5pm but when we arrived, we were told that the kitchen would be open/ready only at 5.30pm. So we had some fruit beer while waiting. (@_@) Haha! I’d wanted to get water but this place doesn’t sell water by the cup (at other places it’d be 50 cents, right?) – here they do only sell water by the JUG, for a good $2.50! So we had a bottle of fruit beer for $9 because… Coca Cola costs a freaking 5 bucks (before service charge) here. -> Makes you feel like you’re ordering a Coke on a plane, ya? 😛

First up was their Signature Mashed Potatoes ($4.90, before 50% discount) which features russet potatoes, mushroom ragout (yum!) and chopped parsley (not that I noticed any)…

iron nori 9 jln wangi

Mashed potato with mushroom ragout is DA BOMB, I tell you. So delicious! I can just have THIS and a cup of iced water and I’m done with dinner. Why do I even need to order anything else?! 😀 They were sweet enough to provide additional (tiny) bowls for sharing, but we didn’t use those. XD

Then we had the Signature Omu Rice Beef Stroganoff ($19.90 before discount).

iron nori macpherson menu

The magic of this dish is in that scrambled egg. Truly magical. I do not usually order omu rice (only my darling does as it’s one of his favorite things to eat) but I’m in love with Iron Nori’s version of it. The only real letdown is the beef, which was overcooked, which is a sad waste of beef, really.

Then we had the Signature Crispy Soft Shell Crab Spaghetti ($22.90) which supposedly comes with “Singapore’s Chilli Crab Sauce”. Notice how everything we ordered is called “Signature” something or other? Yup, as it was our first visit, we tried to go with what the cafe thinks are their specialties. Unfortunately, sometimes this backfires…

iron nori review

I was initially taken aback by how ORANGE this dish looks. Chili crab is orange-colored? But the soft shell crab tastes yummy, so that’s fine. The issue here is the spaghetti and how weird it is. Chili crab pasta with CAPSICUM in it? Huh? And somehow this supposed chili crab sauce doesn’t seem very legit. I would not order this dish ever again. Also, it looks like the chef dumped the crab and the sauce on top, caused a bit of a splatter, and didn’t bother wiping it up. Maybe if they called this dish ‘The Donald’, it’d be able to pass.

And this is the fruit beer we had while waiting for the chefs to return to the kitchen for dinner service. There were 4 flavors to choose from – Mango, Peach, Blueberry and Cantaloupe – and we picked the yellow Mango one. There’s just 2.5% alcohol and 20% real fruit juice, no preservatives nor artificial coloring. And I think I read somewhere on the label that it might have come from China.

Even after the Eatigo 50% discount, the bill still came up to $36.14 which I’m not sure I’ll be willing to pay again. Ha! While we were there, we also noted that you can do takeaways with 50% off via Eatigo. Initially, one guy was told at the cashier’s that the discount will only be 40% since he’s not dining in. But after some discussion with the person I’m assuming is the supervisor or manager, the guy got his 50% discount, which was probably a relief for him since he ordered a lot of food for takeaway, as if he’s feeding 8 people or so.

I might just return to dabao the mashed potatoes. XD

Punggol Seafood: Food’s Good, Service Kinda Sucks

punggol seafood

Had dinner with my darling at Punggol Seafood yesterday as we had purchased a $55 Fave voucher for $110 worth of food at this restaurant. 😀 They serve up more-than-decent fare here, though service standards may not be the best. When we entered, we were directed to a table by a waitress who was giving off the ‘I’m so sick of this sh*t’ vibe. And the best part was when she was serving us the veggie dish – she actually stepped on my right foot which I had thought was safe under the table. She quickly apologized, of course, and as I’m not the sort who will demand to see the “manager” upon the slightest service lapse, I think she got off easy. 😀 Probably also the same lady who broke one of the little acrylic stands (that are on all tables, showing the latest promos) while clearing the dishes at the table next to ours. <- It was rather loud and gave everyone a fright. XD

I’m not sure why. But after the Circuit Breaker, nothing’s quite the same anymore. You feel the same way? Like, the service standards in SG were nowhere near excellent pre-COVID19, but now it’s almost horrific.

And I suppose it’s a vicious cycle: customers feel let down so they don’t return -> bosses note the drop in sales and are less generous towards their staff -> staff are upset at pay cuts and general job insecurity -> staff end up being less welcoming towards customers. [*By the way, I’m not saying this is the case at Punggol Seafood. Just my general observation in SG as a whole]

For a Thursday evening, there was only 1 fish swimming in 1 of these tanks:

punggol seafood review

♫ Lonely… I am so lonely… I have nobody to call my own… ♪

And as for the crabs, I think I saw only about 20 crabs (at most?) in the 2 crates beside the fish tanks.

Yup… this veggie dish… I got my foot stepped on when the waitress was serving up this dish:

punggol seafood punggol settlement

We decided not to have their keropok since we’ve never liked paying for the extras, so I cannot tell you if it’s good. The first thing we ate was the chinese spinach with bailing mushrooms. Delicious. 🙂 I would order this again.

We also had the beef horfun (decent but nothing to shout about). Will probably try seafood horfun next time. BTW, they cook REALLY GOOD mee goreng here. We ordered takeaway previously and their famous mee goreng is certainly famous for a reason.

The fresh coconut is good though. Must order again!

I love it when the crab’s so fresh and so meaty / plump. At some places, there’s very little flesh (lots of empty space between the flesh and the shell) likely due to the crab starving for days as there aren’t many customers. The one we had yesterday was SO satisfying. I feel like buying another Fave voucher now. Hahaha!

We’d asked for a 900g crab. This one didn’t seem like 900g. Maybe 750 or 800? But I’m no expert and didn’t bring my weighing scale. (So just eat lah) I love the sauce. And I absolutely adore those mantou (you have to order at least 4, at $1 each). The mantou are large, crispy on the outside, fluffy and oh-so-warm within. PERFECTION!

We knew we might have trouble finishing all the food so I’d brought a container to bring home what we could not finish. 😀

Don’t waste food, guys! 😛

So we had chili crab for dinner again this evening! Haha! 😀

They have other in-house promotions, if you cannot be bothered to buy a Fave voucher (still on sale, btw).

This is one restaurant worth supporting. The promotions are tempting and the food’s good. If service is a sticking point, maybe get takeaway instead? 🙂 I have no qualms recommending friends to tabao from this place. If you take advantage of the existing deals, you’ll find the food is cheap and good.

Yesterday’s meal cost us (all-in) $56.80 inclusive of one other fresh coconut we took home. 🙂

Good Bites Cafe @ Bishan Sports Hall

good bites bishan

I guess we still think that Good Bites Cafe and us are “ba zi bu he” a.k.a. not meant to be. XD The last time we came by, the place was closed (for what reason I cannot remember now) so we had to head elsewhere for food. Today, we’d made an Eatigo reservation so we were somewhat sure they’ll be open for business, and they were, but the place was undergoing a minor renovation. The aircon wasn’t working, and there were no fans in sight, so it quickly got a little warm in there. (And ‘little’ is definitely an understatement) But what they lacked in terms of a cool atmosphere, they made up for with genuine warmth and hospitality.

Initially, I spotted the Tom Yum Seafood Pasta ($13.90 ala carte, or $11.90 with appetizer and drink as part of a set meal promo currently) and wondered if it’ll match up to the tom yum seafood pasta from Citrus Bistro that I so love. Then… when making payment upfront (before the meal would be served), we found out that Good Bites is actually an F&B brand under Citrus By The Pool, so basically SAME BOSS LAH.

And the overfriendly boss was in da house too, overseeing the renovation works and taking care of their regulars, AND making sure newbies like us come to appreciate just how cheap and good their fare is. Hahaha! I found it a bit stressful as he spoke to us every single time he walked past our table, and he came by often too. “Where can you find $9.90 pasta set meal? With drink and soup some more?!” / “Next time you come, you have to wear jacket ah! We put in new aircon for our customers. Strong one!” [I may have paraphrased some of what he said but the idea is there, ya?] We just had to keep nodding in agreement, praising the food, and thanking him for his erm… hospitality. 😀

Yup… the Tom Yum Seafood Pasta is still as good! 😀

tom yum seafood pasta

Almost good enough to lick the plate. Just a notch below the amazing pasta from Greyhound Cafe in BKK. 😀

The burger, however, bombed. And it’s called Da Burger Bomb ($$10.90 set meal) – I wonder why. The burger bun is uninspiring, the teriyaki chicken (thigh?) within is overly salty and the fries are a little lacklustre. Overall, not a burger I’d ever order again.

good bites bishan review

Equally disappointing is their Sweet Potato Fries ($6.50). ‘Cos I’m used to thicker cuts, like those at I Love Taimei. And sweet potato fries should be paired with plum powder. Otherwise it’s just meah

I would totally come back again for the Tom Yum Seafood Pasta, or just get the food delivered to my home. XD I’m not sure how long the renovation’s going to take. But it looks promising. The boss has an eye for beauty, and he’s quite particular about how he wants the place to look…

DIY Terrarium Kit from Masons Home Decor

terrarium kit singapore

This terrarium kit was supposed to have reached me much, much earlier. But (no) thanks to COVID-19 and international shipping delays, it was delivered to me only yesterday. It would certainly have been a lot of fun to put together (from scratch!) during the Circuit Breaker when we all had so much time on our hands, eh? 😀 But if you want a fun activity to do during the weekend, or with your kids, go get a terrarium kit! And when you’re done, you have a fabulous piece of self-made home decor.

It comes in a large cardboard box and has everything you could possibly need:

terrarium starter kit singapore

I recommend keeping everything within the box so if there’s any spillage, you don’t get it on your floor and/or your furniture…

diy terrarium kit

There were no instructions, so it was really up to my own creativity. I decided to keep the succulents in their individual pots so I can move them about if need be OR replace them with others. I’m not sure why there are flamingos but ya… I probably should get Totoro or some other character as those look so cute in terrariums. 🙂

Essential Oil Diffuser Necklace from Yellow Summer

yellow summer jewelry

I’m currently in love with this owl-shaped essential oil diffuser necklace from YellowSummer.net. At first glance, I suppose many people will think it’s just a piece of jewelry to wear with a plain tshirt and jeans, maybe? BUT… bring it up to your nose for a sniff during the day, when you’re feeling a little tired for an instant perk-me-up. When you’re feeling stressed, you can use a lavender scent to aid in relaxation, and when you need extra focus and concentration, you might want to use a peppermint or lemon essential oil. 😉 And if necklaces are not your thing, you might want to get the essential oil bracelets instead. Head over to Yellow Summer to check them out.

I’ve got quite a number of essential oils given to me by my pal, Julia:

aromatherapy jewelry

THANK YOU! 😀

Along with the necklace, I got a whole set of diffuser pads. Just a few drops of the oils on these pads and the scents last all day (and even till the next day!). I’ve got the ‘Orange’ scent on a sparkly pink diffuser pad today. 😀

essential oil aromatherapy jewelry

I highly recommend getting a piece of essential oil diffuser jewelry. Prices are very affordable – go take a look. And these items do double duty: as a fashion statement or to jazz up your outfit AND lets you reap the benefits of aromatherapy throughout the day.

From Yellow Summer, I’ve also gotten a gold locket which is supposed to be able to keep a small note or picture within, but I’m having trouble opening it – so I’ll just leave it as it is. And the Moon and Stars Necklace too, which you can see in the very first picture above. That necklace is dainty and pretty – I’ll probably wear it during weekend brunch.

But as you can probably already tell, the owl necklace is my fav! And it also comes in a gold color, if that’s what you prefer. 😉 And there are many other designs too, so you’ll be sure to find one that you love.

~

The lady who approached me regarding this review is Jessica Fernhof, and she’s apparently living and working as a freelance writer and SEO manager in Bangkok, Thailand (my fav weekend travel destination!) I think this side business of hers is especially attractive since jewelry is something women can never get enough of. And I believe these products came via dropshipping as they arrived separately, and based on the information on the packages, they weren’t sent to me from BKK! 😀 The downside is that there’s no particular branding or packaging that’s unique to Yellow Summer. Imagine a bright yellow box that reminds you of sunshine… that’d be lovely, wouldn’t it? I would want to collect those, just like Tiffany & Co. boxes. 😀

But the obvious advantage is that Jessica doesn’t have to keep any inventory nor handle any of the packages! 🙂 A great business idea for ladies (and guys) who love their bling bling!

For those who cannot be bothered with setting up a website and doing the marketing / selling, you can still simply SHOP over at Yellow Summer where the prices really are very reasonable! 😀

Cooking With Gimson’s Nyonya Sambal

Gimson Nyonya Sambal

Made clam spaghetti for dinner today as I have this big pack of frozen clams taking up lots of space in the freezer. But for some reason, I wanted to have some brinjal too. And brinjal in clam spaghetti sounds a little weird. So I prepared brinjal + long bean in a sambal sauce, to be served separately. A strange combination, no doubt. But we loved it! 😀

The taste is pretty good. “Legit” as some would say. But of course, it contains MSG as a flavor enhancer. So, you know, it definitely tastes good.

I bought the Gimson Nyonya Sambal paste at a warehouse sale I went to recently. I think I paid $3.50 for this. This 200g pack is supposedly good for 4 to 6 pax – I guess they are referring to using this as sambal for, say, nasi lemak. Otherwise, for a dish of seafood or veggies, one pack will be used up all at once.

If you’d like to try just a little, you can get a $1 pack of Gimson Nyonya Sambal over at Song Fish: https://songfish.com.sg/product/gimson-nyonya-sambal/ And yes, I think it’ll go really well with fish, maybe even stingray! 😀

(*The purpose of this blogpost? To remind myself where to get this sambal next time. 😀 Totally not sponsored by Gimson though they are welcome to – write to me!)

‘A Healthier You’ Products For Better Sleep, Good Skin & Weight Loss

a healthier you

‘A Healthier You’ is an online healthy dried goods store where you can purchase floral teas, herbs, and even herbal soup packages, among other things. I received their gift set about a month back and it was beautifully packaged. 🙂 I’d also asked Elise from A Healthier You if she could recommend some items for me so I can enjoy better sleep, clearer skin and *ahem* weight loss. 🙂 So far, the first two have been attained but I’m still waiting for the weight loss bit to happen. (‘Cos too much bbt) Haha!

a healthier you review

And here are my top 3 favorite items from A Healthier You:

1) Dried Longan with Goji Berries and Red Dates Tea

healthy herbal tea singapore

These are packaged in convenient, sealed sachets you can take with you to the office. The lovely fragrance is evident the moment you open the pack. Take a deep, calming breath. 😀 Then proceed to make a quick and easy brew. The best part of having this tea is that you get to eat the ingredients when you’re done with the beverage! 🙂 And this is what I found out next: If you want a second ‘brew’ out of it, add more water and then chill it in the fridge. It takes just as good when served cold later too!

When I’m craving for bubble tea from now on, I’ll brew one of these instead. They’re priced affordably too, at $12 for 5 sachets.

CHEERS!

2) Peach Gum

Peach Gum is the resin from peach trees and it is rich in collagen and amino acids. As it is much lower in price ($9 for 190g, $15.50 for 360g), you may want to consume peach gum instead of the pricier bird’s nest. 😉 It does take a bit of work though as you need to let the peach gum soften by leaving it in a bowl of water overnight, and then remove the impurities in the morning.

A little really goes a long way. I left about three tablespoons of peach gum in a bowl of water and kept them overnight in the fridge. In the morning, I found they’d expanded tremendously. They don’t taste that good in their raw form so I boiled some water and added a pack of the dried longan + goji berries + red dates, together with the peach gum.

And now I have something that looks like cheng tng. 😀

how to cook peach gum

I have had a beverage with peach gum at bubble tea chain The Whale Tea before. Now I can make their ‘bubble tea’ myself. 😀

peach gum for bubble tea

(left) I didn’t use very much but with some water, the peach gum expanded after being left in the fridge overnight.

Here’s the link to the product: https://www.ahealthieryou.sg/product-page/peach-gum-premium

~
3) Ginseng Chicken Soup

ginseng chicken soup singapore

Just rinse and drain the herbs then put them in a soup pot along with chicken and about 1 litre of water. It’s really tasty and good for days when you don’t have much time to prepare a nutritious dinner. You can simply add in some vermicelli or your favorite noodle and that’s a meal already. 🙂

And you can get it right here: https://www.ahealthieryou.sg/product-page/ginseng-chicken-soup

~

Other items in my gift box include Jasmine Buds (which have lots of antioxidants and may also help in weight loss), Osmanthus Buds (which supposedly have appetite suppressant qualities), Chia Seeds (which are rich in antioxidants) and French Rose Buds (which provide hydration and weight loss benefits).

Take the first step towards better health when you shop online at A Healthier You. 🙂 I do recommend dropping them a note first if you have any concerns regarding existing medical conditions, or if you’d like some advice regarding which products to purchase (like I did). My main concerns were with regard to getting better sleep and having clearer skin. Weight loss would be a bonus – I know what I need to do first of all, which is to cut down on my bubble tea intake. 😀

And oh! Do remember to subscribe by entering your email address over at their website and get 10% off your first order. 😉 There’s also free delivery for purchases over $70!

*From now till 31st October 2020, get 10% off your order (no minimum spending) by using my promo code ‘GRACE10’.*

Sunday: Brisk-Walking Around Bedok Reservoir

bedok reservoir fishing

Perhaps the highlight of our walk around the Bedok Reservoir today was in spotting this sign which indicates that fishing is not allowed on the left (of the sign) but permitted to its right. 😀 I’m not sure if anglers will pay any attention to this, but the fish should. XD Hahaha! We did also spot an angmoh dude having fun water skiing. No picture though. And I did clock enough steps today to make my pal Samy proud of me. 😀 What was supposed to be a lazy Sunday spent watching Korean dramas at home became one super productive day which began with a walk around the Bedok Reservoir. 13,458 steps by lunchtime. Thanks to my darling who’d asked me this morning if I wanted to go for a walk at the Bedok Reservoir Park. (YES, where should we go next?)

And I love this next photo I’d taken. Saw four uncles seated on these ubiquitous red kopitiam chairs, looking up at their caged pet birds and the sky. 😀 So chill, so lepak, so relak one corner

bedok bird watching

All too often we find ourselves so busy, hustling, trying to do more, earn more, achieve more. But there’s a lot of joy to be found in slowing down. People say “smell the roses” but there are no roses here, so sit back, relax and let the birds serenade you.

And we also spotted this white PUB robot doing its rounds. It was whispering something so softly… about safe distancing, I think. Not like anyone paid any heed.

PUB robot at bedok reservoir

As for drinks, thankfully we’d brought our own water bottles. We spotted some ‘Forest Adventure’ venue offering a treetop obstacle course, and the drinks they were selling cost $2 each. Same price at the vending machines located near them. As for the obstacle course, Google tells me prices start from $39. So never mind… I’ll just walk. 😀

A short distance away, where the washrooms are, are more vending machines:

bedok reservoir vending machine

Prices are MUCH lower. But as you can tell, vandalism is rife in this area. So there’s a CCTV, ‘Crime Alert’ poster and guard rail for the machine.

We did get soy milk elsewhere, at this shop called ‘Soy Appetit’ as their name in Chinese is just too cute. It means to make you happy / to make you laugh / to cheer you up. Just $1.50 for a small cup.

soy appetit

Then we had lunch at the hawker centre. Because ‘older’ estates like Bedok and Tampines have such good hawker food. It makes no sense to head to a hipster cafe or brunch spot, no matter how popular those are.

$7 (upsized) bowl of prawn noodles… delish!

bedok hawker centre prawn noodles

The broth was SO flavorful. Two prawns sliced into four pieces. Four meaty pieces of pork rib. The chili sauce was lovely too. Why we bother eating in restaurants, I know not. 😀

And my darling said he’d get bak chor mee but came back with this bowl of… meatball noodles? Just $4 and it comes with 10 meatballs. And the hawker was so sweet – he insisted that his customers should all be seated and he’d serve them the food when it’s ready. At another bak chor mee stall, there were some 4 or 5 people in the queue. Will go back and support this uncle ‘cos the portion’s REALLY good and the service is fantastic.

bedok hawker centre meatball noodles

And that concludes our Bedok Reservoir adventure today. Would love to be back again soon. The weather today was absolutely PERFECT for walking. What we’ll need to bring next time:

  1. Cap
  2. Sunglasses
  3. Insect repellent

The ‘trail’ / route is largely made up of sand / gravel so you may also want to bring slippers to wear on your way home as the sand will most certainly make its way into your shoes. 😀

Are Face Mask Prices Back At Pre-COVID19 Levels?

31st July 2020: Disposable Face Masks sold at Guardian pharmacy for $23 (50pcs)

It has been more than 6 months since I first purchased surgical face masks from Guardian pharmacy. Back then, in January 2020, I wasn’t even that afraid of COVID-19. Our leaders hadn’t sounded any kind of alert (I think) and I was simply doing some window-shopping in my neighborhood mall. I saw one guy buying kid-size masks, and I noticed that the little bit of shelf space allocated to Guardian’s housebrand surgical masks was empty, so I made an online purchase on Guardian’s estore – I bought their surgical masks, N95 masks and even *ahem* My Beauty Diary face masks (which are of totally no help when battling the virus). 😀

Interestingly, I think Guardian wasn’t even aware of what was to come, as they were offering promo codes. I used ‘HUAT18’ for $18 off! 😀

Guardian face masks

And if you’ve noticed, the delivery date was 25 January 2020, the first day of Chinese New Year. Imagine that! Guardian even delivered then! In fact, I rushed home after a round of CNY visiting and found the delivery guy at my doorstep, all dressed in CNY garb. It was actually quite hilarious.

But notice the difference:

In January, I bought Guardian 3-ply surgical masks at $11.55 for 50 pieces (i.e. one box). And that price is before you factor in the discount. Today, the price for Guardian’s 3-ply disposable masks is $23 for 50 pieces. (And the boxes they come in look very similar. I’ve yet to check with Guardian regarding the difference in the quality of the masks)

So, in short, no, prices for Guardian’s surgical face masks are likely not back at pre-COVID19 levels. If you can get your hands on surgical face masks to begin with.

And if you’re now wondering why I’d bought 40 N95 masks (two boxes) and 100 surgical masks… I’m not even sure. Perhaps it was divine prompting. Or just regular kiasu-ism or kiasi-ness, I don’t know. (@_@) But that one online shopping experience prevented me from paying exorbitant prices for face masks when EVERYONE was panicking.

I’m certainly not wearing N95 masks unless it’s for a special purpose, like a trip to the hospital to visit a loved one who is terribly ill. And I do also reserve the surgical face masks for days when a trip to the doctor is necessary, or when I’m visiting an elderly relative. On all other days, I wear reusable masks. Now we have so many of them, thanks to the G, ya?

I gave some of those N95 and surgical masks I’d purchased to family members and have used a few. And I never had to QUEUE(!) or pay for masks when prices were going through the roof. And I did, in fact, share on my Facebook page when my order of masks arrived. So I do wonder if anyone following me also went to get some masks then, when prices were still reasonable / low and before the panic started.

Now it seems I cannot even order N95 masks from Guardian’s estore if I want to. But I don’t have to as I still have 1 box of them at home. Same thing for the surgical face masks.

I think it’s important to be ready always. Guess it’s something I learnt from my father. Always be prepared. Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security. (I think most of us are in this stage right now)

Today, I was at FairPrice and noticed some biscuits on sale – my favorite Khong Guan (Marie and Sultana) biscuits – so I bought them, on top of iced gem ones (also on offer). It’s when no one is panicking or stocking up that things are cheaper so I see no harm in getting some. I also bought *ahem* 5 packs of vermicelli (FairPrice housebrand) as I could not get any during those crazy periods when there were supermarket runs. These things will keep for many months. And I actually like eating them. So don’t call me siao. I’m just prepared. 😀
