Visiting Penang With A Toddler – Day 1: Penang Botanic Gardens, Gurney Plaza, The Top

Our 2024 trip to Penang sounds like a 4D3N holiday but in reality, on the first day, we arrived at our hotel in the evening, and the final day just saw us heading to the airport for our afternoon flight back to SG. So we basically had only 2 full days to explore Penang as best we could with a little one. XD So… first stop on “full day #1” was JOJA Bagels, which is also really close to Very Hotel. Since the hotel doesn’t provide breakfast, we made our own plans. Unfortunately, Melody wakes up very early every morning so we had to wait when we got to JOJA Bagels as they open only at 830am. HOWEVER, staff saw us standing outside and invited us to go in and grab a seat first! WOW. Thanks, guys!

Freshly prepared, the bagels were such a treat! A really good start to the day. As for drinks, he had Mocha while I ordered the Ice Shaken Lemonade.

They have baby chairs here too, so you can definitely bring your little ones here. AND the toilets are super clean.

After breakfast, we booked a Grab ride to the Penang Botanic Gardens. The lady driving us there was a local but had never been to their Botanic Gardens before. XD Similarly, we found out that Very Hotel staff didn’t know about Seafood Choo (just round the corner) and had never been to the Wonderfood Museum. Certainly makes one wonder why they’d not visit places that are pretty accessible.

I LOVE Melody’s expression. Hahaha! It was a hot day and she was due for a nap so photo-taking is among the last of her priorities.

I’d done my research *ahahaha* and knew that the chapatti w/sambal sardin at the Waterfall Cafe in front of the Botanic Gardens is worth a try. So my darling had that (requested for 1pc of chapatti instead of the usual 2) while I sipped on Lipton’s ice lemon tea (from a can) while trying not to melt from the heat. XD

This quick meal cost something like RM9?

We then took yet another Grab ride (yes, we travelled around Penang exclusively via Grab) to Gurney Plaza – KOI bubble tea (!!!), food and a spot of shopping. Then we hopped into another car and went to The Top.

At The Top, we visited the Penang Boutique Aquarium… which was much bigger than the term “boutique” suggests. I definitely recommend bringing kids (of any age) here. We got tickets via Klook, got them printed out at the ticketing booth one level up, then came back down, got them scanned at the entrance and had a lot of fun.

We also went to the Jungle Gym… where I really felt like I got a good workout (as the word “Gym” suggests). OMG. It’s built, obviously, for kids so when I have to accompany my kiddo, I’d often have to bend, crouch, squat, and eventually collapse in a heap at the ball pit right below. XD I was so tired, I didn’t take any photos. But I can tell you the ball pit’s pretty cool – there’s one of those interactive screens whereby you can throw balls at sea creatures and all and earn points. And they even have some kind of contraption whereby balls placed on top end up levitating. Very cool.

Jungle Gym Fees:

(Weekdays) RM25 Toddlers, RM48 Kids, RM10 Guardians

(Weekends) RM35 Toddlers, RM66 Kids, RM10 Guardians

*RM8.50 socks. Free entry for those below 12mo with a PAYING sibling.

Dinner was at Two Frenchies, a two-minute walk away from Very Hotel, according to Google Maps.

Bless the staff! They’re so astute and seem to be able to predict the future. Level 1 was almost filled with diners, so they asked us to go up to level 2 (and we had the whole floor to ourselves). There’s even a little cosy corner that looks like someone’s living room… and it was here Papa decided to tie Melody’s hair… awww just look at that:

The calm before the storm.

Shortly after the food was served… Melody got a tummyache and needed to poop. Sounds normal except that she was also having constipation, and toddlers straining while trying to poop sound like they’re being skinned alive.

Thankfully, we were on the second floor, and with the restroom door shut, I don’t think people downstairs heard much of it, if they did hear anything at all. So while they feasted on duck confit and sipped on (I’d imagine) good wine, I was helping Melody get her poop poop out. She screamed, strained, wailed….

I think it was at least a good 30 minutes? But felt like an eternity.

We ordered the RM16 Fish Crockets for Melody (so cute! Heart-shaped fish nuggets!), the RM42 Pork Marengo for me (I ate this when it’d gotten cold already so erm… I have to say I don’t remember it fondly?), and hubz had the RM43 Signature Burger. LOVE the fries here!

I didn’t really get to enjoy the food… my darling did though. XD It’s always better to be the father instead of the mother, I tell you. Because the little one always screams for Mama no matter what the issue is. (@_@)

And I thought that was the end of it. Except… the same thing happened during dinnertime the next day. O.M.G.

“Quit your job! Earn over $200 per month with World Ventures!”

Here’s a comment left by *yawn* another World Ventures rep called Shierley on my World Ventures blogpost. Most of the comments I receive from reps are downright nasty but this one seems ‘mild’ so I am reproducing it here. Be warned, it’s lengthy…

“Hi
I read all what u say about WV good and bad experience. I joined WV now almost 1 year. And i said it has been a great year for me. Well for me, WV not only give me income, but also family and friends internationally. I used to work in one of world IT company. I quit my job because i didnt have any more passion towards it and to chase my dream, to have my own business, especially when u already have kids, so u will prefer to have a more flexible hours works.

I never imagine to be in this MLM business, but WV was introduced to me at the right time, where i was looking for business. I have a traditional shop, which it cost me lots for a business. So at that time, sure why not give it a try for a 360$ business. During my membership till now, i do earn income, and i do earn the passive income already. I dont always get cycle, but i do keep getting that residual. So for me, for a business that cost 360$ but can give me more than 200$ every month, wouldnt it be worthed.

For those of you who doesnt want to be part of WV, i just think that its fine. Because the business or the club is just no for everybody.
Its the same thing like you were offered a fitness membership, maybe for you, you see that you will enjoy and use the facilities, but for others, maybe they prefer something else.

Or same way like u open a restaurant. Maybe for others, they will like it, but for me, i dont enjoy it. If it doesnt suit you, doesnt mean the restaurant is a scam right?

I did search after i joined, and found about the WV scam n everything, i freaks me, but i didnt stop. And later i found out that it was a lie. It’s the same thing like every body who maybe think the product doesnt suit them, and they complain.

I wasn’t a traveller, but ever since i joined WV, every month i travel. And what i can say, i have a great experience, not just for travelling, but i get many experience of dealing with people. Because its really different when u working together in this business, then u working with your colleague. In here all of us are biz partner, so u cant control them. in that way u’ll learn how to manage team, and u’ll learn many character of people. Some of my friends joined, and later on they resigned, but that doesnt mean they didnt become my friends. I think it just how we treat people.

I have simple rules in my life. Just think positive no matter what happens. It doesnt mean, WV will be my final biz but i just take the + and make as a good experience, no matter what the result is.

One thing i see that WV gives opportunities for those who in needs.
Let make an example, if i want to open a restaurant, how much money would i need to invest? Millions of dollars right? but WV only 360$, and it just how u want to make it work.

So its really up to u if the 360 u pay , to become how much money u wish to have, or just become expenses that u have to pay every single month.

Even in every business, u have to pay monthly cost (electricity, water, employee). Let say u own a restaurant, and in the first -two months u havent reach the target of income u wish, will u close your restaurant?
So back again, i think it simple how people see it. If they see this an opportunity, then just take it, but if dont just dont be someone dream stealer. Life is like flipping coins. its always a probability”

~ And here’s my take ~

*Note: Perhaps English is not Shierley’s first language, so I shall not comment on her writing style.

Shierley, you quit your job for WV which gives you “more than 200$ every month”?! Sorry, this sounds rather ridiculous to me. Most people won’t be able to survive on $200/month. And you have already been a rep for a year so I have to say that WV is DEFINITELY NOT FOR EVERYBODY! Who is it for? I’ll let my readers decide for themselves.

Why compare WV with a restaurant and fitness club? Are you sure you are a business owner? If a restaurant asks you to pay a membership fee to dine there unless you bring 4 friends who pay them a membership fee, will you still dine there? Oh yeah, maybe YOU would.

Do you mean to say that you have kids and yet you travel every month? Wow. You can’t be a really dedicated parent then, if all you want is to abandon your kids for travel. But I know it doesn’t make sense to be a WV member unless you want to travel frequently. Point taken.

About this “Dream Stealer” title I have been presented by many WV reps… here’s what I have to say: Thank you.

I do not think I have the power to steal dreams. If you think someone with a dream can be stopped by a blogpost, you are very much mistaken. If someone is about to be misled into WV by a “friend”, and needs an opinion from me / my blog, then yes, sorry, I have stolen the dreams of WV reps who want to ‘make it big’ and ‘earn big bucks’ from recruiting people into WV.

Sunday Siesta 7: My Love For Traveling & Colorful Bags

[The Sunday Siesta series: You’ll find no advertorials and no sponsored posts. Just recommendations of stuff I really like, in no more than 3 paragraphs! Every Sunday! 🙂 ]

Ripcurl backpackI’m heading to Hong Kong later this month and I can’t help but want to pack my bags already! 😀 I’ve booked 3 holidays at a go, because of recent Scoot promotions. The round trip airfares (for 2) to Hong Kong cost just S$117.26 all-in! Even if we were to fly there just for dim sum in the afternoon, it would seem worth it. LOL! After all, I read that someone’s taxi fare during the opening of the MCE was over 70 bucks. It’s sometimes cheaper to fly! 😀

It is thus hilarious how some World Ventures folks think that I must hate traveling because I refused to join their MLM company and blogged (here, here and here). I LOVE to travel, just not with banner-waving folks and having to con-vince 4 of my friends to join WV. I save much more on my holidays when I book them myself. Airfares for 2 to Taipei and back: S$473.34. Airfares for 2 to Bangkok and back: S$252.98. Ridiculously low fares, right? I’d like to see WV beat that!

Also, I LOVE colorful bags. When I had a full-time corporate job, I tended to buy bags in practical colors – namely, black. These days, I get them in all colors. Life’s too amazing to carry a bag in a boring color. If I wear colorful clothes, it might seem garish and OTT. But a bag in rainbow hues is just such a welcome splash of color. The Ripcurl backpack in the picture above is from Australia. I think it cost me less than 30 AUD. It’s probably too small to contain all my shopping loot in Hong Kong, so I’ll bring a spare bag! 😀

I seriously can’t wait to fly! 😀
